This book is aimed at introducing the basic concepts and techniques of debate which facilitate clear and coherent English expression. The competitive nature of the activity provides a unique motivation to understand and express complex linguistic concepts and ideas. The growth of debate in Asia can be directly attributed to its utility as a tool for learning the language. Additionally, debate is unique among extra-curricular and competitive events because it demands critical thinking. Students are asked to evaluate and examine complicated social issues from multiple sides and to argue for and against positions that they may or may not believe in. This process requires that students be well versed on a variety of social issues. However, most importantly, it requires that they not only understand and know information, but that they do something with that information.

High school students will be interested in buying this book in order to hone their abilities in preparation for applying to and starting college, but also to allow them to compete in the growing English language high school debate community. At the college level the textbook will be valuable in helping to promote debate among Korean students. Students will be able to use the textbook as a guide and it will provide a foundation to students who lack specific resources regarding debate in Asia, but who desire to participate in local competitions and the yearly Asian championship.
